Lessons from the UAE: What Leaders Can Learn About Building Trust in Times of Uncertainty

Published: April 18, 2026

Before the ceasefire, there were moments that were loud. Moments that felt uncomfortable—moments That could have been filled with uncertainty. Yet at no point did I feel unsafe. At no point did I feel SCARED. Why didn’t I??

That made me reflect: What can leaders of organizations around the world learn from the leadership of the UAE?

Because leadership is not tested when things are calm. Leadership is revealed in moments of uncertainty—when people are listening more carefully, watching more closely, and feeling more deeply.

How many times at work have you felt that same discomfort? Not from physical noise, but from:

  • rumors spreading faster than facts
  • decisions announced without context
  • changes that disrupt your sense of stability
  • silence when clarity is most needed

In those moments, people ask themselves two questions:

Do I feel safe here?
Do I trust the people leading me?

And those answers determine whether they stay—or start looking for a way out.

During those recent moments of uncertainty, I found myself saying: If there were ever a place I would choose to be in times of crisis, it would be the UAE. That is not by chance. That is leadership.

So what creates that level of trust?

From what I observed, it comes down to a few critical behaviors:

1. Visible and present leadership

Leaders who are seen, heard, and felt. Not distant, not hidden. Not only in official settings, but present among people—walking, engaging, being accessible. Leadership that is felt, not just announced.

2. Consistent, reassuring communication on all levels

Clear updates about safety, stability, and even everyday matters—ensuring people know what is happening, what is available, and what to expect. Even when there isn’t perfect information, there is communication. Calm. Clear. Grounded.

3. Commitment to people’s safety and wellbeing—through action

Not just words, but visible measures taken. Transparent communication about what has been done—and what has not. Support extended to businesses and individuals alike, often proactively, without being asked. The deep feeling “I matter - I’m looked after”.

4. Clarity of direction and values

A steady sense of where we are going, what we stand for, and what matters most. Even in uncertainty, the bigger picture remains clear.

5. Inclusion as a lived principle

A sense that everyone is considered, everyone is protected, everyone belongs. Not limited by nationality or background—but a shared sense of “we.”

6. Trust built before it is needed

Trust is not created in crisis. It is revealed in crisis. It is built through consistent leadership long before, and you can only rely on what has already been built.

This is where leadership moves beyond strategy and into something deeper.

Because people don’t stay in organizations because everything is perfect. They stay because—even when things are not—they feel safe, valued, and guided.

The Real Question for Every Leader

When things get loud…
when uncertainty enters the room…
when people start to question what’s next…
